Massachusetts State Police Museum and Learning Center Release – 04172018 –  Massachusetts State Police Museum Opens Doors

The Massachusetts State Police Museum and Learning Center will be opening their doors for visitors on April 19, 2018. The opening will be at the Museum Annex, 308 Providence Road in South Grafton, MA. The original Museum, located at 44 Worcester Road in Grafton, was forced to close when fire tore through a second-floor conference room on February 26, 2017. The fire destroyed everything in the conference room and caused extensive smoke and water damage to much of the collection housed in the building.

The new location, which is larger than the original, will temporarily house the Museum’s displays and its Learning Center during completion of renovations at the original building. The displays cover the history of the Massachusetts State Police (MSP) from its inception in 1865 to the current day, including life-sized displays of specialty units like the Mounted Unit and K-9 Unit, as well as vintage cruisers and motorcycles.

The Museum is open on Tuesdays and Thursdays 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and Saturdays 12 p.m. to 3 p.m. A Grand Opening Ceremony will be held May 20, 2018, from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m.

Charlie Alejandro, Executive Director of the Museum, expressed the Museum’s mission is ‘to be a place for inquiry, exploration, and learning opportunities for all ages” and that their philosophy is ‘to encourage lifelong learning and discovery.”

The Museum’s Learning Center program was devised in keeping with the STEM / STEAM programs and is based on scientific inquiry and hands-on learning through various programs and projects. Most of these programs relate to the Massachusetts State Police and law enforcement in general, but a variety of other captivating topics are included, and each is informative, fun and creative. The programs also align with the Massachusetts Curriculum Framework and is suited for children age five to sixteen. Adult programs are also offered, with all upcoming events soon to be posted on the Museum’s website.

Upcoming events:

Thursday, April 19th and Friday, April 20th from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.  ‘Make and Take’: badges, patches and challenge coins. Children may stop by the Museum to view various badges, patches and challenge coins, then make one of their own to take home.

Saturday, April 28th the Museum presents ‘A Day in the Life of a Trooper’. An MSP trooper will speak about police work and answer questions, followed by a tour of the uniform collection and an opportunity for everyone to create a collage.
